Vic: Man charged with killing 10-week-old daughter

MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP - A Melbourne man accused of killing his 10-week-old daughterfaced court today after he was arrested during an overnight siege.

Brent David Quarry, 32, allegedly killed his daughter Sharni and assaulted his 28-year-oldde facto wife at the couple's Besant Street flat in suburban Hampton East.

Police were called to a domestic incident at flats in Besant Street just before 11pm(AEST) last night.

Police negotiated for several hours with Quarry before members of the Special OperationsGroup (SOG) entered the house and found the dead child.

Quarry's wife was found unconscious at the scene and was taken to hospital with minorfacial injuries.

He faces one count of murder and two counts of intentionally causing injury after allegedlyassaulting a policeman.

Quarry, dressed in a standard-issue remand suit and suffering facial injuries, satwith head bowed during a brief appearance at the Melbourne Magistrates Court late today.

Prosecutor John Bentley asked for an extra month to prepare the brief of evidence againstQuarry because he had a history of domestic violence and had come from Tasmania wherea number of witnesses would be interviewed.

Asked by Magistrate Clive Alsop what had happened to Quarry's face, Mr Bentley saidit was due to an "incident in relation to the arrest".

Quarry has not been required to enter a plea and has made no application for bail.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at committal mention hearing on November27 in the same court.
