Fed: Scientists say disconnecting from city supplies could help
Scientists say householders in new suburbs could help save the nation's water by disconnectingfrom city drinking supplies.
CSIRO scientists say new suburbs could introduce rain water tanks and domestic firesprinklers to help ease fears of future water shortages.
Rainwater tanks could provide drinking water and recycled wastewater could be usedin toilets, the laundry and garden.
CSIRO urban water scientist GRACE MITCHELL says such changes could cut demand for drinkingwater piped to suburbs by 62 per cent.
The CSIRO has made the comments after completing an urban water supply study.
The study was a joint CSIRO/Brisbane City Council initiative using a site located inthe Brisbane suburb of Heathwood.
