FED: PM savages ABC over Indonesian visit coverage

SYDNEY, Feb 17 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has savaged the ABC over its coverageof his recent visit to Indonesia, personally calling the public broadcaster's managingdirector, Russell Balding, before an on-air apology was made.

The complaint involved a report filed from Indonesia on Saturday night, the introduction

misleadingly suggested Jakarta would regard any war on Iraq as an attack on Islam, TheAustralian newspaper reported today.

The introduction was rewritten in Sydney and not checked before it went to air, thenewspaper said.

The report itself said such claims were made by Indonesian Islamic groups, but notthe government of President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

Last night, the ABC broadcast an apology for failing to make the distinction clearafter a "furious" Mr Howard confronted ABC journalist Jim Middleton in the lobby of aJakarta hotel at the time.

The Australian reported that Mr Howard told Mr Middleton the mistake affected Australia'snational interests.
