QLD: Court rejects appeal of youths freedom after robbery
A Queensland appeals court judge has suggested an expert panel might replace judges in
determining sentences for criminal offenders.
Court of Appeal Justice BRUCE MCPHERSON says judges come under fire no matter what
sentencing option they take -- and perhaps a group of penal experts would be a better
alternative.
He made the remarks as the court rejected an appeal by the state attorney-general against a
sentence the Crown claimed was too lenient.
The case before the court related to an armed robbery by two young offenders.
The relevant maximum sentence for the crime is 14 years imprisonment.
The pair received 12-month intensive correction orders.
